White granite cliffs drop straight into the Pacific at Odo Kaigan, with cracks rising above the sea. The appeal is placing your own protection and following the rock’s natural lines; the responsibility includes anchors, tides, and getting back to the clifftop.
This guide helps you decide whether Odo Kaigan suits your team, plan a winter visit, understand the options without a car, and choose routes by grade.
What kind of crag
Odo Kaigan (大堂海岸, おおどうかいがん) is in Otsuki, Hata District, Kochi Prefecture, at Shikoku’s southwest tip inside Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park. Distinguish the sightseeing destination, Odoyama Observation Deck (大堂山展望台), from the climbing approaches: reaching the viewpoint does not put you at a route’s start.
According to Yama-Kei’s CLIMBING-net, the south-facing granite ranges from slabs to slightly overhanging rock. Trad cracks dominate, alongside face climbing, bouldering, and multi-pitch routes. There is little fixed gear beyond popular routes; where the topo does not show an anchor, expect to build your own.
Climbing 5.8 and leading a team up a 5.8 sea-cliff trad route require different skills. Your team needs gear-placement, anchor-building, route-finding, and retreat skills. For a first visit, investigate Monkey (モンキーエリア) or Ozashiki (お座敷エリア). CLIMBING-net lists these and Harbor (ハーバーエリア) among the easier approaches, but Harbor remains tide-dependent.
Route coverage
ROCKTOPO still listed 85 routes when rechecked in October 2026: 75 cracks, 9 face routes, and 1 boulder problem. CLIMBING-net lists 88 or more. Their coverage differs; neither count should be treated as a complete inventory.
More than half of ROCKTOPO’s crack routes are 5.9 or easier, making this worth considering for experienced trad teams seeking crack mileage. The White Area (白いエリア) has a separate page; adding its count to the main page does not establish a deduplicated total. Cliff heights in sightseeing descriptions are not route lengths.
Sectors and approaches
The table retains ROCKTOPO’s 11 sectors and approach labels. Choose an approach your team can manage before choosing a grade. “Close” is a database label, not a promise of easy walking.

C = crack, F = face, B = boulder. 登り返し有 is ROCKTOPO’s approach label; it does not establish how to retreat after rappelling in. The listed rappel distances are also insufficient to determine rope requirements. Confirm the descent, return route, and alternatives with a topo before entering a sector.
When to go
Prioritize November to March. CLIMBING-net and ROCKTOPO agree on the season. The south aspect and reflective white granite can make windless winter days hot. Carry enough water and layers for the difference between climbing and standing still at a belay.
A suitable season does not settle coastal access. Kaerezu is inaccessible at high tide; walking into Harbor from Monkey is a low-tide option, with rappelling required otherwise. For either sector, plan both entry and exit around the tides and check the day’s weather and sea conditions separately.
Getting there
Public transport
The rail connection is Sukumo Station (宿毛駅) on the Tosa Kuroshio Railway. For buses toward Otsuki and Kashiwajima, check both the trunk-line and “大月町各地” local timetables on Kochi Seinan Kotsu’s website, including transfers and the return journey. When rechecked in October 2026, the Otsuki local page listed a revision from that month. An old fare table is not a timetable.
VISIT KOCHI JAPAN gives a walk of about 25 minutes from Kannonbae Iriguchi (観音礁入口) to Odo Coast. This is sightseeing access information, not an approach time to each climbing sector. Without a car, connect the bus stop, your chosen sector, carrying equipment, and the return journey before committing; consider sharing a car or arranging a pickup if the final leg remains unresolved.
Driving
From Sukumo, follow National Route 321 toward Otsuki, then turn toward Kashiwajima. The official tourism page gives about two and a half hours from Shimantocho-chuo IC; the Otsuki Tourism Association gives about 40 minutes from Sukumo Station to Odoyama Observation Deck. These have different endpoints and starting points; neither includes the climbing approach after parking.
Sector approaches are spread around Odo Tunnel and the old road. CLIMBING-net’s road description still includes text from before the tunnel opened, while its record of the old road being passable dates to 2013. Check current road conditions instead of treating those directions as confirmation of access.
Parking
ROCKTOPO lists roadside spaces on the west and east sides. The west space is listed for about two cars; no capacity is given for the east. These are database locations rather than staffed parking facilities, and both pages warn of possible road closures.
Match your chosen sector to its parking location, then confirm on arrival that parking is permitted and will not obstruct traffic. If the shoulder is full or the road closed, change your plan. A sightseeing car park is not automatically an alternative entrance to every sector.
Rules before you go
Check road access and climbing access separately. ROCKTOPO’s parking pages warn of closures, and CLIMBING-net records rockfall on the old road. Driving nearby does not establish access to every sea-cliff approach. See the Ministry of the Environment for the national park context, and check the JFA access-issue list and local notices before departure. This guide has no management document sufficient to confirm current climbing permits, registration, or access-fee requirements; ask local climbers and the relevant managers before visiting.
- Camping and supplies: CLIMBING-net says coastal camping is prohibited in principle and that there is no water source or public toilet. This is a secondary crag description; a current management notice was not obtained. Book a permitted campsite or accommodation and sort out drinking water and toilets before entering the sectors.
- Fixed gear and descent: CLIMBING-net warns that most routes require your own anchors. Bring protection for the selected route and confirm anchors and descent in a topo. A database “face” classification alone does not establish that quickdraws are sufficient.
- Monkeys: CLIMBING-net and the Otsuki Tourism Association both mention wild monkeys. Keep food packed away rather than spread out at the base.
- Adding fixed gear: Permission to bolt or install anchors has not been verified here. Consult the managers and local developers first.
For emergency medical assistance, call 119 and describe your location and the injured person’s condition; the Japan Fire and Disaster Management Agency’s English guide explains how to call. Save Japanese sector and route names, parking locations, and offline maps before departure, and share the retreat plan with your companions. Ask your insurer whether trad climbing, multi-pitch climbing, search and rescue, medical care, and repatriation are covered.
Routes by level
YDS and V-grade conversions follow the Mountain Project international grade comparison chart and are approximate; "approx." marks grades the sources give without a/b/c (such as 4 or 5+). The original grade is the one that counts.
The tables include all 84 roped entries in ROCKTOPO’s main-area list, retaining native YDS; its one boulder entry is described separately. theTopo’s 11-entry list uses different displayed grades, preserved in notes without treating them as YDS confirmations. Its Treasure Ship entry is included separately pending a Japanese-name match; do not add it to the ROCKTOPO count as a confirmed distinct line. The developer’s 2024 account supplies five further named main-area entries, each attributed in its row; fixed grade alone does not establish the protection style. White Area’s separate 28-entry list is outside these tables. Length fields are blank; 2P/3P names supply pitch counts, not individual pitch grades or rope requirements. Split grades are grouped by their first value.
For a first look at the sectors, read Kyokara Kimiwa’s introduction (2022, updated 2025). First-person reports appear in the relevant route notes; their approaches, anchors and retreat choices describe those historical trips, not current directions or equipment lists.
Videos open through View videos in each row. Top-rope footage, time-lapses, the Monkey Roof left variant, H Crack’s title-grade difference and the Great Roof direct finish are labelled separately. The SAM short clip does not establish complete two-pitch coverage or descent. Video-title grades describe that clip’s version; use the table sources when choosing a route.
Beginner: up to 6a (YDS 5.10a and below)
Start by comparing Monkey’s Guinomi, Super Crack and Monkey Roof. A lower grade does not remove gear-placement or sea-cliff retreat requirements; Kaerezu, Harbor and Saihate still need separate access planning.

Bouldering: Harbor
ROCKTOPO’s remaining entry is トラバースボルダー, listed as Japanese grade 2級 in Harbor. No Font or V grade is established here; do not interpret it as a roped route.
Where to look things up
- ROCKTOPO: Odo Kaigan: locate sectors and read tide and rappel notes, then consult the route list. Missing lengths need another source.

- 2026-10-26: Reorganized the introduction, transport, and route selection using the crag template; added grade-band tables, the complete main-area route inventory, route videos, first-person reports, a crag introduction, and a guidebook entry. Rechecked ROCKTOPO, CLIMBING-net, the bus operator, and the publisher, retaining the limitations around missing route lengths and current management documents.
