Starting in 2025, the way people search is changing. Google AI Overview delivers answers directly at the top of search results. Perplexity uses AI to synthesize multiple sources into a single response. ChatGPT's search feature lets users get information without ever leaving the conversation.

What this means: users may never click through to your site, but AI will cite your content as the source of its answer.

AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — is how you prepare for this new reality.

What Is AEO

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. The goal is to make your content the preferred citation source for AI search engines.

"Answer engines" refers to tools like these:

What these engines have in common: they don't just list links. They read, understand, and synthesize your content, then answer the user's question in their own words — and (sometimes) attach your link as a source.

AEO doesn't replace SEO — it builds on top of it. A solid SEO foundation (structured data, semantic HTML, meta tags) is also a solid AEO foundation. But AEO places additional demands on how you write content.

How AI Search Engines Choose Sources to Cite

Understanding the "selection logic" of AI search engines is key to optimizing for them. Based on current observations, AI engines tend to prefer content with these characteristics:

1. Direct Answers to Questions

AI engines look for "passages that directly answer the user's question." If your article spends 500 words on background context before getting to the point, the AI may skip you entirely and cite the article that gave the answer in its first paragraph.

Less effective:

In today's rapidly evolving technological landscape, SEO has become a critical concern for every website owner. As search engine algorithms continue to update... (the definition finally appears 500 words later)

More effective:

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of improving your website's technical setup and content so that search engines can better understand and index it — ultimately boosting your position in search results.

2. Structured Information Presentation

AI engines are particularly good at extracting content in these formats:

  • Definition sentences: "X is Y" format
  • Lists: ordered or unordered
  • Tables: comparison-style information
  • Steps: "Step 1... Step 2..."
  • FAQ: question-and-answer format

This doesn't mean every article should be written as an FAQ — it means using the right format in the right place.

3. Credibility Signals

AI engines assess the trustworthiness of content:

  • Author information: named authors are more likely to be cited than anonymous ones
  • Cited sources: articles that reference official docs, papers, or authoritative sources
  • Last updated date: recently updated content gets priority
  • Domain consistency: a blog that consistently covers a specific technical domain earns more trust for that domain than a random content farm

4. Unique, Original Perspectives

AI engines have already processed enormous amounts of "repackaged" content. If your article is just a translation of official documentation, the AI will go straight to the official docs. But if you provide:

  • Real hands-on experience and lessons learned from failures
  • Comparisons of different tools with concrete recommendations
  • Best practices tailored to specific contexts

These are things AI can't find in the official docs — and exactly the kind of content it most needs to cite.

AEO Implementation Strategies for Blogs

Here are concrete AEO optimization strategies you can implement in a blog:

TL;DR Blocks

Add a TL;DR (Too Long; Didn't Read) summary at the very top of each post. This serves three purposes:

  1. Gives AI engines an "ideal citation passage"
  2. Lets readers quickly assess whether the full post is worth their time
  3. Increases the "answer density" of the page

Post Structure Optimization

Answer first: The opening paragraph should immediately address "what this post covers" and "what the reader will get out of it." No preamble, no detours.

Use questions or explicit topics for H2s: AI engines treat H2s as "sub-questions" to understand the article's structure. ## What Is AEO is far more likely to match a user's search query than ## Introduction.

One idea per paragraph: AI typically extracts content at the paragraph level. Pack too many topics into one paragraph and the AI may only capture half the point.

JSON-LD Structured Data

Structured data sits at the intersection of AEO and SEO, and it's where technical optimization has the greatest impact. AI engines use structured data to:

  • Confirm content type (article, tutorial, FAQ)
  • Extract author information and publication dates
  • Understand relationships between pages (series, categories)

Updated August 2026: this used to recommend HowTo schema for tutorials and FAQPage for FAQ pages. That advice has expired. HowTo rich results stopped appearing in 2023, and FAQPage rich results were fully retired on 2026-05-07 (Google's documentation changelog). Google's May 2026 generative AI optimization guide also says outright that structured data isn't required for generative AI search, and that no particular schema makes AI Overviews favor you.

The sensible position now: get Article/BlogPosting + BreadcrumbList + Organization right, and put the remaining effort into the body copy.

Machine-Readability of Content

Make sure AI crawlers can actually read your content:

  • Don't put key information inside images: AI crawlers have limited image comprehension
  • Use <code> for code, not screenshots: AI can read and cite code blocks
  • Use HTML <table> for tables, not images: structured tables are far easier to extract
  • Don't block the wrong AI crawlers in robots.txt: this is more nuanced than "let User-agent: * through". Each vendor splits training, search indexing, and user-triggered fetching across different user agents, and blocking the wrong one removes you from that platform's answers entirely:
    • OpenAI: OAI-SearchBot is the one that decides whether you appear in ChatGPT search answers; GPTBot is for training and ChatGPT-User is user-triggered (official docs)
    • Anthropic: Claude-SearchBot (search index), Claude-User (user-triggered), ClaudeBot (training) (official docs)
    • Perplexity: PerplexityBot (indexing, not training) and Perplexity-User (user-triggered; Perplexity states it generally ignores robots.txt) (official docs)
    • Google: Google-Extended only affects Gemini Apps and Vertex AI generative APIs and does not affect Google Search — blocking it will not remove you from AI Overviews, which are served through Googlebot (official docs)

References and Citations

Include a references section in each post. For AEO, this has a dual effect:

  1. Builds credibility: AI engines cross-reference the sources you cite
  2. Establishes knowledge graph connections: your article becomes linked to authoritative sources

Measuring AEO Effectiveness

This changed in 2026: Google Search Console now has an official generative AI report. The Search Generative AI performance reports, launched 2026-06-03, show impressions in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover generative features, broken down by page, country, device, and date. It's rolling out to a subset of sites, so your property may not have it yet; the help documentation defines the fields.

Note the limits: it reports impressions, not clicks or citation counts, and it only covers Google. Everywhere else you're still on your own:

  1. Manual testing: Search your post's topic in Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Google AI Mode to see if you're being cited
  2. Monitor traffic sources: Watch for referrers from AI search engines in your analytics (most tools filter bots out by default, so this needs configuring)
  3. Track branded search volume: If AI cites your content, it may drive more brand-name searches
  4. Use Perplexity's citation tracking: Perplexity explicitly labels cited sources, making it the easiest platform to observe

The Future of AEO

AI search engines are evolving quickly. A few trends worth watching:

  • Citation standardization: AI engines are developing more explicit citation and attribution mechanisms
  • AI crawler protocols: this originally said "such as ai.txt". Two years on, what actually emerged is a different set: Cloudflare's Content Signals Policy (adding search / ai-input / ai-train usage signals to robots.txt), the IETF AIPREF working group, and llms.txt — though llms.txt has landed far below expectations, as covered in part 3 of this series
  • From stated preference to enforcement: on 2026-07-01 Cloudflare announced that from 2026-09-15 its defaults will block "mixed-use" crawlers (those combining search, training, and agent use) from ad-supported pages, and that Pay Per Crawl is becoming Pay Per Use (announcement; the "mixed-use" definition, the scope, and Pay Per Use appear only in the press release). robots.txt is a request; a CDN-level block is enforcement
  • Content licensing: Models for licensing content between publishers and AI companies are still being worked out
  • Multimodal search: AI engines are beginning to understand images and video, not just text

Whatever direction AI search takes, one thing won't change: high-quality content that's clearly structured and offers original perspectives will always be the best optimization strategy.

What Google Officially Says About AEO/GEO: the "you don't need to" list

On 2026-05-15 Google published an official guide addressing the popular claims around AEO/GEO head-on. Its position is simple: AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on top of core Search ranking and quality systems (RAG grounding plus query fan-out), so SEO fundamentals remain the foundation — and several widely circulated "AEO tactics" are unnecessary.

Bear in mind this guide speaks for Google only. Perplexity runs its own index and reads full HTML including structured data; ChatGPT has its own fetching and passage-level retrieval. Part 4 of this series breaks down those pipeline differences. What makes this document valuable is that it's currently the only source where a search engine states, on the record, that specific AEO tactics don't work. Any AEO advice that contradicts it carries the burden of proof.
